ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Returning to Brighton for 50 Years of Punk Month at Pink Moon, Picture This: A Public Image presents 42 previously unseen photographs taken by Spike Waltzer in L.A. venues between 1978–1980.

Featuring Blondie, John Lydon & PiL, The Clash, Madness, The Specials, The Selecter, 999, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Go-Go’s, Patti Smith, The Cramps, X and many more.

The exhibition explores Spike’s extraordinary life, from working as a Hollywood paparazzo to becoming a photographer, activist and promoter immersed in punk culture.

Alongside the photographs is a selection from Spike’s personal archive, including contact sheets, zines, magazine covers, record releases and images from the anarchist, punk and queer scenes of L.A. and San Francisco.

Featuring writing by L.A. Times music writer Don Snowden, the exhibition also explores the atmosphere and venues that made L.A. an essential stop for touring bands.

Previously shown in Brighton, London and Manchester, the exhibition makes its international debut in Tokyo this October.
