Holding both compassionate storytelling and sonic experimentation close to her heart, Karma weaves tales of her revolutionary ancestors with messages of support for those marginalised by our increasingly cruel world across her debut.
Having experimented with multifaceted influences on her three critically acclaimed EPs C’est Karma is fully immersing into pop music and culture. Bringing together maximalist pop moments inspired by SOPHIE, Imogen Heap, Caroline Polachek or Björk with this polyglot’s striking lyricism, how to peel an orange is an eclectic body of work. Meandering through spaces of comfort and discomfort, its musical palette ranges from bombastic synth work through to ethereal, heartfelt balladry. Despite its many touchpoints, and languages, Karma remains at the core of everything as a beacon of enduring hope and resilience.
Based in Amsterdam and raised in Luxembourg by a Portuguese mother and an Italian father, Karma has a deep connection with her Portuguese heritage. This shines through on the album; from her dedication to incorporate elements of traditional Fado music to her use of the language, moreover it's present thematically. For Karma this place embodies the dichotomy of comfort and discomfort that runs throughout this project – for her it’s a place filled with warmth, love and joy yet it’s still strongly marked by queerphobia, despair and pain.
