Dehd’s fifth album, Poetry, is a vivid exploration of love, heartbreak, and personal reflection, steeped in evocative imagery. The trio—Jason Balla, Emily Kempf, and Eric McGrady—craft a world filled with summer romances, flickering old flames, and intimate moments that capture the highs and lows of emotional relationships
Following the success of Flower of Devotion and Blue Skies, Dehd took an adventurous approach to writing Poetry, embarking on a road trip through New Mexico and the Puget Sound. Isolated in nature, they focused intensely on writing, producing some of their most honest and vulnerable work. For the first time, they collaborated with outside producer Ziyad Asrar (of Whitney), who helped expand the emotional depth of the album
The album beautifully balances the excitement of new love and the pain of breakups, often within the same song. On Light On, Balla reflects on jealousy and self-sabotage, while Kempf confronts her feelings for another woman on Pure Gold, celebrating liberated love. Optimism permeates tracks like Dog Days, where Balla sings, Everyone I know is bleeding, but I know we’ll be alright, a testament to the band’s hopeful outlook
Poetry concludes with the powerful breakup anthem Forget, leaving listeners with a sense of introspection. Ultimately, the album embraces life’s messiness, encouraging listeners to take risks and live boldly. It solidifies Dehd’s place as a band that finds beauty even in heartbreak
