Joan As Police Woman is the stage name of Joan Wasser, an American musician and singer-songwriter known for her genre-blending sound that fuses soul, indie rock, and experimental music. Born in 1970 in Maine, she began her musical journey as a violinist, gaining recognition in the 1990s with the rock band The Dambuilders. After the tragic death of her boyfriend, Jeff Buckley, in 1997, Joan took a break from music but returned with a more introspective approach to songwriting.
In 2006, she released her debut solo album, Real Life, under the name Joan As Police Woman, which was met with critical acclaim for its emotional depth and unique blend of styles. Known for her sultry vocals and vulnerable lyrics, Joan explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery in her music. Subsequent albums, such as To Survive (2008), The Deep Field (2011), and Damned Devotion (2018), have cemented her place in the indie music scene.
In addition to her solo work, Joan has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Antony and the Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, and Lou Reed, further showcasing her versatility as a musician and performer.
