Enquanto o país arde de tédio, as Sereias mergulham de vez no jazz-punk que promete ser hino de uma campanha que urge trazer para as ruas. No centro a poesia mordaz de A. Pedro Ribeiro, poeta maldito, anarquista, ex-candidato a Presidente da República, em choque constante com os ambientes turvos, electrónicos e imersivos dos mascadores sónicos que o acompanham. Em disco colocaram o “País a Arder”, atirando-nos, num só golpe, para o divã. E como o Portugal artístico precisava disso! Este é um tratado político, social e filosófico, num tempo em que tudo isso corresponde a uma afronta ao “status quo”, ao grande mestre. Escrito com uma violência enganadora, nas entrelinhas da provocação, na epiderme de uma couraça onde se pode bater à vontade. Não só nas letras, mas também na música. Neste formato avantgarde, punk, free jazz e post-rock que provoca a erupção voluntária de sentidos, na liberdade da execução e na negação dessa mesma postura convencional. Uma (in)disciplina “zappliana” que nos leva para os territórios de ThisHeat, Pere Ubu ou The Fall. E se os discos representam uma audácia aviltante nessa multiplicidade de perfis, a “praxis” ao vivo é não só direta, intempestiva como canibal e exasperante. O equilíbrio mantém-se à base dos extremos e tão desconfortáveis no palco se parecem, que acabam por manter o foco no público.

Sereias (concert)

While the country burns with boredom, Sereias dive headfirst into jazz-punk, promising an anthem for a campaign that demands to take to the streets. At its core is the biting poetry of A. Pedro Ribeiro, a cursed poet, anarchist, and former presidential candidate, constantly clashing with the murky, electronic, and immersive atmospheres created by the sonic craftsmen accompanying him.

On record, they delivered “País a Arder”, throwing us onto the couch in one fell swoop. And how the artistic Portugal needed this! This is a political, social, and philosophical manifesto at a time when such ideas are an affront to the “status quo,” the grand master. Written with deceptive violence, hidden between the lines of provocation, on the surface of an armor that invites one to strike at will. Not just in the lyrics but also in the music.

In this avant-garde format—punk, free jazz, and post-rock—they provoke a voluntary eruption of the senses, embracing the freedom of execution while rejecting conventional postures. A Zappa-esque (in)discipline transports us to the realms of This Heat, Pere Ubu, or The Fall. And while their records represent a brazen audacity in this multiplicity of profiles, their live praxis is not only direct and tempestuous but also cannibalistic and exasperating.

The balance is sustained through extremes, and so uncomfortable do they seem on stage that they ultimately draw the audience’s focus.
