Cymande (sah-man-day) – The most important Black British group of their generation, known for their pioneering blend of jazz, funk, soul, and Caribbean grooves. Formed in 1970s South London by Caribbean-born musicians Patrick Patterson (guitars, vocals) and Steve Scipio (bass, vocals), Cymande became the first British band to play the Apollo Theater and toured with legends like Al Green. Despite early success in the U.S., they faced a lack of support in the UK and disbanded in 1975.
Their timeless music lived on, sampled by hip-hop icons like De La Soul, The Fugees, and Gang Starr. Now, in 2025, Cymande returns with Renascence (via BMG), their first album in decades, a bold continuation of their iconic sound. Featuring collaborations with Jazzie B and Celeste, Renascence showcases their signature grooves with a modern edge.
Since reforming, Cymande has played to sold-out audiences worldwide, with fans spanning generations. Guided by founding members Patterson and Scipio, Cymande continues to inspire with their music’s enduring messages of community and spirit.
