Baba Yaga's Hut Presents:
Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan + Jo Johnson
Oct 24th - Rich Mix
Gordon Chapman-Fox’s Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan project sees a bold visual aesthetic and striking retro-futuristic audio identity seamlessly melded together into one evocative musical package. Over five albums and one EP, Chapman-Fox impeccably soundtracks the construction and growth of a northern English community from the mid 1970’s to early 1980’s, rendered in shimmering arpeggios and soaring, euphoric leads.
Over three decades, Jo Johnson’s musical path has serpentined from punk through techno to deeply affecting electronic minimalism. A former guitarist for the influential 90s band Huggy Bear, she later immersed herself in the techno scene, joining the Bleep43 collective in 2001 and founding its label. With her first solo album, Weaving (Further Records), she embarked on a new journey into transcendence and catharsis through improvised, generative and composed electronics. Her subsequent releases with Castles in Space, Mysteries of the Deep and, most recently, with Quiet Details show an artist in continual creative evolution and growth.
“It's like discovering that a talented kid you admired in high school has grown up and made good in a field completely different from the one she was best known for…because whatever Johnson's backstory, Weaving is a remarkably accomplished take on ambient music, and the fact that this is her debut album makes you wonder where Johnson has been hiding all this time.” – Philip Sherburne (Pitchfork)
