Since the 1910s, designers have turned to film as a tool to shape thought, critique norms, and envision futures. From Lillian Gilbreth’s female gaze to Moholy-Nagy’s social vision, from the Eames' poetic resistance to Nina Toran’s object-language—film has long expanded the scope of design.
Rooted in Bauhaus ideals (“Open the Eyes”) and developed in the Visual Department at MIT by Gyorgy Kepes, film became central to rethinking design education.
Today, the widespread creation of films by designers signals a critical shift: films are no longer just documents of design—they are design themselves. They speak, provoke, and circulate ideas through global platforms and accessible tools.
