Seeking to forge a new language that honours cultural identity while embracing the evolving traditions of the 21st century, Córas Trio‘s music is rooted in the jigs and reels of the Irish traditional seisiún scene, deconstructing and reimagining familiar melodies which become a springboard for free improvisation, exploration, and dialogue.
At the heart of their work is a commitment to freedom. They strive to capture the raw, unpredictable energy of the seisiún and apply it to the very structure of the genre itself – stretching and compressing time, distilling melodies to their atomic essence, venturing into chromatic detours, and above all, engaging in a three-way, fully improvised musical conversation.
Hailing from the Isle of Skye, Brìghde Chaimbeul is a leading purveyor of Celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes. A native Gaelic speaker, Chaimbeul roots her music in her language and culture, drawing inspiration from the world of interconnected piping together with influences from ambient, avant garde and electronic music.
In 2025 Chaimbeul released her third album Sunwise (tak:til/Glitterbeat), a remarkable record steeped in folklore and tradition but also embracing minimalism, experimentation and the eternal presence of the drone.Appearing at hcmf// for the first time, Chaimbeul’s love for this music, these traditions and shared stories, shines through everything she does.
