U performs new album ARCHENFIELD, a personal collection of ambient music and found sound that examines the relationship between geographical space and aural histories. Support from Bristol’s memotone.
Working as an archivist, collagist and chronicler through careful sonic curation, U’s output defies categorisation, with past releases on imprints such as ManMakeMusic, Where To Now?, Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound, Technicolour and Lex.
An MPC is the main tool of his trade but used in the fashion of someone who has been twisting around and limboing beneath the boundaries of its possibilities for the entire of his recording life.
On new album ARCHENFIELD U mined a wealth of recorded material relevant to the area to make this record. With a nod to traditional music, U created beautifully atmospheric sound pieces that are often mixed with meticulously researched snippets from film, TV, YouTube and found home recordings to create a stirring reflection on local history and broader themes of how we interact, or even fail to interact, with English folklore today.
memotone is one alias of Will Yates, a composer and musician working at the fringes of the music industry. Leaning into jazz, folk, contemporary classical, ambient and esoteric fourth-world music. Memotone's live show is part pre-prepared/part improvised performance, using a mix of live instrumentation, samplers, effects and loopers to build a window into his singular soundworld.
