This special evening celebrates the life and legacy of Evelyn Dove, a pioneering British jazz singer, actress, and trailblazer who broke racial and gender barriers in the 1920s and beyond. Born and raised in Battersea, Dove studied piano, singing, and elocution at the Royal Academy of Music before achieving international acclaim as the first Black woman to record and be regularly featured by the BBC.
Her remarkable career opened doors for generations of artists to come and continues to inspire the local community today — now honoured with a blue plaque on her former home. Through captivating live performances, this concert will bring Evelyn’s story and music to life, paying tribute to her enduring influence on British jazz and culture. The evening features the World Heart Beat Band, led by acclaimed jazz pianist and educator Ayo Vincent, alongside rising star Danny Piers, whose expressive performances and innovative compositions have earned him recognition on both national and international stages.
