Description

The Distorted Frame Film Club marks 25 years since the UK release of Spike Lee's incendiary cult comedy Bamboozled, a furious, satirical polemic on the racism inherent to American society and the cultural hypocrisy that sustains it. Angered by the constant cultural appropriation and ignorance of his colleagues, Pierre Delacroix (Damon Wayans), the only Black writer at a television network, creates a show so offensive it is sure to get him fired: Mantan: The New Millennium Minstrel Show, which features Black performers in full blackface portraying the most racist stereotypes ever conceived. Unfortunately for Delacroix, the show is a massive hit.

To introduce the film, we welcome Julian Alexander, Co-Programme Leader in BA Filmmaking at University of East London and writer/director of the short film Whiteface, which will screen before the feature.

“…a vital work that’s equal parts crystal ball and cannonball: glittering and prophetic, heavy and dangerous” – Ashley Clark (The Guardian) on Bamboozled

Distorted Frame is a London-based community film club that presents screenings of great digital films - beautiful, original films which embrace the unique qualities, possibilities and flaws of the digital camera.
