The Grayston Unity presents Vonavella + Support.
The dreamy harmonising of Everything But The Girl. The propulsive urgency of The Strokes. The lilting folk-pop of The Coral. The introspective songcraft of Belle and Sebastian. The bittersweet, lyrical side-eyes of The Beautiful South. Vona Vella have all these elements and so many more, all weaving together to form a contemporary sound both gossamer delicate and fiercely robust. Carnival is the result, a deftly crafted collection of mostly guitar-led, dazzling indie-pop, a sound made uniquely their own through stunning dual vocals, where Dan's Jeff Buckley-esque tone merges with Izzy's echo of The Cardigans Nina Persson. For the last two years, their lifestyle fed into the both the panoramic musical spirit and acerbic lyrical themes. Both now 24, and a couple, these are poetic, observational songs on the nature of human relationships, on the foibles and fallibilities of both friendship and romance, of what it means to be a striving, creative young adult in 2025.
UNDER THE RADAR (8.5/10)
"There really aren't enough superlatives to bestow on Carnival other than to say beg, steal, and ultimately buy a copy because with any luck, by the end of 2026 Vona Vella will hopefully be household names."
GOD IS IN THE TV (9/10)
"What. An. Album. It's right near the top, in terms of long players notjust this year, but in all of the 2020s. Remarkable stuff."
CLASH (8/10)
"Knockout hooks, melody for days and plenty of wham-barn-thank-you-ma'am guitar thrashing. It's just really fucking good."
THE NEEDLE DROP
"ff their 2023 eponymous debut stood as a simple yet solid alt rock record, then their sophomore effort Carnival rushes in with pounding drums, a deeper punk-flavored bass, and the swirling of both original member's melodic and honeyed vocals."
BACKSEAT MAFIA
"Carnival suggests a band not just growing, but crystalising in the best possible way. The sweetness remains, those airy, interwoven melodies still drifting in on the breeze. But there's a newfound propulsion in the foundations. Vona Vella may take their name from flowers, but on this evidence, they're no delicate bouquet. They're in full bloom, reaching higher than ever."
