The Belgrave Listening Group is turning its focus to an artist who could arguably be called the greatest rapper of all time—a true wordsmith, and someone with a unique connection to our own city: the one and only MF DOOM.
For the 69th edition of the Listening Group, we’ll be diving deep into two of DOOM’s most iconic releases. First, we'll experience his debut LP Operation: Doomsday in full, in complete darkness. This groundbreaking album was a seismic moment in underground hip hop—self-produced, defiant of industry norms, and peppered with now-iconic samples from the Fantastic Four. With it, DOOM began to craft the mythos that would define him for decades.
Next, we’ll listen to what is widely considered one of the most important hip hop albums of all time: Madvillainy (2004), the legendary collaboration between DOOM and producer Madlib. Created in seclusion and nearly scrapped after early leaks, the LP finally emerged as a masterpiece—ripping up the rulebook on sampling, song structure, and what a hip hop album could be. Together, DOOM and Madlib built a sonic world that remains unmatched: abstract, brilliant, and endlessly influential.
Resident DJ and host Andrew Devine will offer a few words before each listen, with ambient sets between records to guide your ears and mind.
This is a night for serious listeners. A night to honour two genre-defining releases.
A night for DOOM.
