The three guys were eager to play again. They’d all been around for a while. Greg Horton, a successful designer and drummer for 70s punk band The Plague, wanted to return to the gigs, the energy and the chaos. Steve Slack, a skilled woodcarver and ex-UK Subs member, was ready to take a break from restoring Queen Victoria’s bed and pick up his bass again. Steve Halliwell, a multi-instrumentalist who played with King Swamp, Little Machine, and Shriekback, wanted to let loose on guitar. They started writing and rehearsing at Brixton Hill studios and soon their sound came together as a gritty power trio.
Then Rose Head joined, and everything changed. Rose stands out. She has the powerful voice of Joplin and the charm, confidence, and stage presence of any great indie frontwoman. She took what the band had been working on and added her own alchemical fire. The songs shifted from well-made stories of love, betrayal and street life in South London to classics that feel instantly familiar.
TEMPLE ROSE take inspiration from female-led guitar bands like Vinegar Joe, Siouxsie, Amyl, Fleetwood Mac and Skunk Anansi. They create music with a driving rhythm section, powerful songs and in Rose a voice of true authority and tender beauty.
