A distinctive evening of musical crosscurrents unfolds at Ladbroke Hall, as pianist Harry Baker explores the rich dialogue between French classical music and jazz. Moving seamlessly from the luminous harmonies of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel to the improvisatory worlds of John Coltrane and Bill Evans, the programme weaves together reimagined masterworks, seminal jazz tunes and the American Songbook. Featuring guest artists including innovative violinist Roberts Balanas and acclaimed jazz trumpeter Tom Syson, the concert brings together artists from contrasting traditions to create a fluid, genre-defying sound world - where modal chant meets modern harmony, impressionist colour dissolves into swing, and composition merges with improvisation in real time.
Harry Baker is an award-winning British pianist and arranger active at the highest levels of both jazz and classical performance. Collaborations with artists including Fatma Said, Jamie Cullum and Sheku Kanneh-Mason have led to performances at Wigmore Hall, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the Royal Festival Hall. Recent international touring highlights include the Edinburgh International Festival, Verbier Festival and Konzerthaus Berlin. As an arranger, Harry has written extensively for Decca Records, ABRSM and the BBC Proms, and is a Lecturer in Music at Pembroke College, University of Oxford, where he is the Founder and Director of the Oxford University Jazz Scheme.
