*Mumbai-based designer and artist Ashiesh Shah presents Taamr, his first solo exhibition in the UK, showcasing a new body of work centred on copper as both a material and a concept. Opening at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, the exhibition features sculptures woven, structured and shaped in copper, reflecting Shah’s exploration of form, materiality and design.*
*Drawing on influences across cultures and eras, Shah combines traditional Indian craftsmanship with a modern sculptural language. Working with artisans across India, he celebrates and reinterprets regional craft traditions, including Longpi pottery, Channapatna woodwork and Dhokra metal casting. At the heart of the exhibition is taamr—the Sanskrit word for copper—which Shah views as a symbol of transformation. He embraces the material’s natural ageing process, allowing oxidation, touch and time to become part of each piece.*
*Highlights include the Brahmand Cabinet, combining antique copper vessels with black granite, alongside the Mirror Mosaic and Dveep coffee tables, inspired by jewellery-making techniques and Mumbai’s island geography. In Matka Mobile and Matka Mirror, handcrafted earthen pots are reimagined as sculptural forms inspired by celestial movement. Together, the works explore craft, memory and modernity while highlighting copper’s enduring relevance.*
