The Language of Glaze: Shimizu Uichi at 100 is a new exhibition in London marking the birth centenary of celebrated Japanese ceramicist Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004). Presented at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in collaboration with deBiousse&West, the exhibition features exceptional and previously unseen works by one of the most significant ceramic artists of the twentieth century.

Born in Kyoto, Uichi Shimizu trained under Ishiguro Munemaro and developed a distinctive ceramic practice inspired by Song Dynasty traditions. After establishing a noborigama (climbing kiln) near Lake Biwa in 1970, he became known for his craquelure celadon and iron-glazed works, earning designation as a Living National Treasure in 1985.

This exhibition presents a rare selection of Shimizu’s ceramics, showcasing his masterful use of form, glaze, and fire. Featuring works never before exhibited and preserved by the artist’s family, it offers new insight into the legacy of one of Japan’s most important ceramic artists.

Presented by Ladbroke Hall.
